What three things were used as an anaesthetic before chloroform was discovered? Ether, cocaine, alcohol
what were the problems with ether? It caused sickness, it was caused patients to have irritated lungs, it was highly flammable and it caused very deep sleep.
What was the problem of using alcohol? It only caused you to be drowsy and you could still feel pain.
Who discovered chloroform? James Simpson
When did James Simpson discover chloroform and first use it? 1846 discovered and 1847 is when it was first used.
What were the problems with chloroform? it caused death, problems with your body, if you inhaled too little you would still feel pain.
Why did people not want to take pain relief? People didn't trust them as their effects were not fully understood, it went against their religious beliefs, the amount of deaths it was causing put doubt in people, doctors told people that being put unconscious killed you, so people were afraid.
How were early attempts to overcome infection done? They would perform surgery in the patients home, they would wash their equipment in water, and florence nightingale insisted that their should be only one patient in each bed.
when was the 'black period'? 1850-70's
Who discovered carbolic acid and when? Joseph Lister and 1867
How did he discover it? He saw that carbolic acid was used in sewage works and that it killed parasites, so he thought that it could be used to kill the microbes causing infection.
What else did he discover? A thread had to be left dangling out of the wound so you could pull the stitches out. Silk could not be sterilised.
