Autobiography An account written about a person's life by him(her)self
Bias Slanted viewpoint that prevents fair or open minded assessments ex: Refs (jk)
Biography An account written by other about one's life
Characterization The writer's description of a character through his actions,thoughts and dialogue.
Chronological order Having event arranged by the order of when they happened (time)
Climax Turning point in a story's plot
Colloquial language Everyday language or terms Ex: That bugs me instead of: that bothers me
Comparison Consideration of two or more things paying attention to similarities and differences
Conclusion The end or final part of literature. After the falling action.
Conflict The problem that the main character(s) have to work out. It is the main part of the plot.
Connotation A feeling a word invokes other than it's literal meaning
Consonance Close repetition of the same consonant
Contrast Consideration of two or more things with attention to differences.
Denotation Translation of a sign to it's meaning. Like how dictionaries define it.
Dialect Different characteristics of the same language
Dialogue Quoted conversation between two or more people.
Diary Form of autobiographical writing. Log or record of activities and reflexions. EX: Anne Frank
Dramatic Irony Irony present in speeches or situations of drama and is understood by the audience, not the actors
External conflict Struggle or problem between the main character(s) and nature or another person (outside force)
Falling action Part of literacy after the climax but before the conclusion.
Figurative language Expressions with a different meaning then the literal meaning
Flashback The insertion of an earlier event to the narrative
Foreshadowing Hinting at event that occurs later in a literary selection
Genre Type of literature -Fiction -Biography -Adventure -Non-fiction -Romance -Mystery -Science fiction -Horror
Hyperbole An exaggeration
Homonym Words spelled or heard the same way that have a complete different meaning.
Imagery Formation of mental images
Limited Omniscience Narrating in the third person
Initial Incident Event that begins the story's problem
Internal Conflict Struggle of the character and himself
Introduction Presentation of the setting, characters, ect.. Beginning in literature
Irony Use of a word to express an opposite meaning than the literal sense
Metaphor Comparison between two things without using like or as.
Mood Emotional feeling created by strong words and the author's attitude towards the situation.
Mystery Literature dealing with puzzles, crimes, detective problems.
Myth Traditional legend. Early history explaining natural and social phenomenons events (things people cannot explain) Surnatural events.
Narrative hook A sentence that grabs the reader's attention. In the beginning part of literature.
Narrative twist Surprise near the end of the book. Different than what was inferred earlier in the book.

Novel Fictitious prose literature.
Onomatopoeia Written word that replaces a sound in literature.
Oxymoran Where two opposite ideas are joined together. -Alone together -Living death -absent presence..... ect...
Parallelism Repetition of the same grammatical structure. Used in emotional passages
Paraphrase Recap; Express the meaning of a writer/speaker using different words. Writing in your own words.
Personification Giving human/animal attributes to objects.
Plagiarism Taking someone's work and claiming it as your own.
Plot Arrangement of actions, conflicts and events. They make the story of the text.
Point of View Narrator's position in relation to the story
Protagonist Main character, good guy.
Pun Humorous use of words that sound the same but differ in meaning. ex: You should try to get ahead, everyone else has one :P
Repetition Reuse of the same words in order to create an effect.
Resolution The solution is found to all problems and conflicts. The end of the literary creation.
Rhyme Same sound occurring in different words/sentences. Often used in poetry.
Rythm Stressed and unstressed words written or spoken in a language.
Rising action In the plot. Series of incidents that create tension. Includes character's actions before the climax.
Satire Blend of wit, irony and humor used to reveal a characters flaws.
Sarcasm Use of irony to mock
Setting Environment which the story takes place
Short story Story with a fully developed theme but less elaborate action. Shorter version of a story.
Simile Comparison using -like- or -as-
Situational irony Irony which actions have the opposite effect than what was intended.
Slang Informal word/phrase that is restricted to a certain culture of group of people.
Stereotype Mental picture that one draws upon making judgement instead of being open-minded.
Suspense Feeling of excitement or curiosity that entices the audience to know more.
Symbolism Using a concrete object to stand for an abstract or complicated idea.
Synonym A word that means the same as another word in the same language
Theme Central idea about life that emerges from literature.
Tone Reflection of your emotion in your voice
Villain A character whom's actions(evil) are significant to the plot.
