The Bench | (Check 'Props') |
Peter's book | Peter's book is a reminder of reality and normalcy - his rush to take it at the end of the play symbolises his desperate attempt to forget what has happened that day and remain blissfully ignorant. It is also a symbol of his class, emphasising his intelligence and also his privilege of having the time to relax and read. |
The dog | A symbol of Jerry's attempts to have a meaningful relationship in his life. - "Then, bam, he snarled and made for me again" - "I loved the dog now, and I wanted him to love me...I hoped [it] would understand" - "We regard each other with a mix of sadness and suspicion; and then we feign indifference" - "We neither love nor hurt because we do not try to reach each other" |
The Zoo | Society -"Everyone separated by bars from everyone else" -"You're an animal too" - The fighting over the bench |
Jerry's possessions | - Knife, two forks and two spoons: he owns very luxuries, almost everything is a necessity. - Typewriter that prints nothing but capital letters: he has never been able to communicate effectively - clumsy - Two picture frames, both empty : Lack of relationships |
