The Hindbrain The Medula: continuation of the spine/ controls breathing, heart-rate and digestion The Pons: receives information from the visual areas to control actions / responsible for dreaming, sleeping and waking Cerebellum: receives information from the Pons and coordinates the sequence of body movement / contains 80% of the brain's neurons, yet is 10% its mass
The Midbrain The Reticular Formation: a network that spreads through the brain and passes along information
The Forebrain Cerebrum: majority of the forebrain / covered by the cerebral cortex / divided into left and right hemispheres, separated by the longitudinal fissure, connected by the corpus collosum Hypothalamus: grape-sized / maintains the body's environment, and the four f's - feeding, fighting, fornicating and fleeing Thalamus: receives all sensory information except smell / relays this information to the relevant parts of the cortex
