Pregunta Respuesta
What is a dative bond? Sharing of two electrons when both electrons are provided by one of the linked atoms?
What is the atoms that supplies the pair of electrons called? Donor
What is the atom that doesn't donate any electrons called? Acceptor
Can you distinguish a co-ordinate bond from a normal covalent bond? NO
Where are co-ordinate bonds usually found? Transition metal complex ions, the ammonium ion, the hydroxonium ion, carbon monoxide and nitric acid
What are the requirements for a dative bond? The atom acting as the donor must have a lone pair of electrons. The acceptor should have a vacant orbital to accept the electron pair.
What is an ammonium ion? NH4+
Do co-ordinate compounds have higher or lower boiling points than purely covalent compounds? HIGHER (lower than ionic)
Are co-ordinate compounds soluble? Soluble in non-polar solvents but less soluble in non-polar solvents (can react with water)
Can co-ordinate compounds conduct electricity? NO
What biological molecules depend on co-ordinate bonding? Haemoglobin, Myoglobin, Vitamin B12, Chlorophyll
How do some drugs depend on of co-ordinate bonding? Some act as donors in dative covalent bonds and some act as acceptors for biological donors
Shape:Linear Bond Angle: 180
Shape: trigonal planar Bond angle: 120
Shape: tetrahedral Bond angle: 109.5
Shape: trigonal bipyramidal Bond angles: 90, 120
Shape: octahedral Bond angle:90
If a molecule has lone pairs present what can happen to the shape of the molecule? The molecules shape becomes distorted due to repulsion between lone pairs and other pairs of electrons
Shape: pyramidal Bond angle: 109.5-2.5=107
Shape: bent planar Bond angle: 109.5-4=104.5
Shape: square planar
