Conduction, Convection and Radiation ENERGY: Can be transferred by conduction, convection and radiation. Insulation is used to stop energy from escaping.
CONDUCTION (Heat energy is conducted from the hot end to the cold end of an object.) Heat energy can be transferred by conduction. Metals are good conductors (allow charges to pass through it) of heat. Insulator are poor conductors, e.g. non-metals and gasses. The hotter a metal, the more kinetic energy their vibrations have.
CONDUCTION (Heat energy is transferred from hot places to cooler places by convection.) Convection: particles with a lot of heat energy in a liquid or gas move and take the place of particles with less heat energy. Liquids and gases expand when they are heated. Their particles move faster. Hot particles are less dense so they rise into cold areas.
RADIATION (Infrared radiation involves electromagnetic waves) Radiation can even work through the vacuum of space. Radiators are often painted with gloss paint, but they would be better at radiating heat if they were painted with matt paint instead.
