AUDIENCE THEORIES | Uses & Gratification - Blulmer & Katz This theory was developed in the 1960's, after the first generation to grow up with TV. Personal Identity: One of our main goals was to have the main characters mirror the target audience. So under this theory, they should feel they are able to identify with the characters. Therefore, with them being reflected in the production, they feel more valued. Informal: The main thing to be learnt from our production would be the information of a real life event, especially as we stated it is based on a real event. Also, although our target audience should understand the conventions of social media, other audience's may feel they can learn the workings of the software's we use. Entertainment Escape: Our existing target audience should feel pleasure from our production because they understand the conventions we developed into our trailer. Alternatively, films and other medias are a way to escape the reality of life. Social Interaction: Our trailer should influence social interaction and the target audience may feel connected to the characters, |
Hierarchy of Needs - Maslow This theory has significant role in advertising and services, as the needs of the audiences are highlighted - and most assume we already have most of the needs developed already. Our trailer would appeal to cognitive, aesthetic and becomingness and love (mainly the mainstream audience) Cognitive = our trailer, being within the genre of thriller may meet the cognitive needs of our target audience. For example, being a part of advertising, it is natural that it immediately makes us question the advert. Such as do we need to see this film? is this film directed towards me? what does this mean? etc. Aesthetic = we feel our trailer meets the needs of this because film (or thriller) fans will enjoy this and enjoy the conventions we possessed. Becomingness and Loving = we feel our trailer meets this, more for the mainstream audience, as if they feel themselves enjoying this they may feel apart of the crowd. | HALLS READING POSITIONS: Stuart Hall was concerned with how the media presented certain things to create a dominant ideologies. He believes that the media present things with audience positioning in mind. Preferred/ dominant reading = The reader fully interprets the way the creator intended it to Negotiated reading = Partly/fully interprets the way the creator intended it to. However, if someone modifies the production/text, then they may agree with their interpretation too. Oppositional reading = The reader interprets the production/texts totally oppositional than the creator intended them too. |
In accordance to our poster and website, we wanted our audience to be in the negotiated or preferred dominant reading position. We feel our direct target audience will be within the preferred reading position, as they should understand the conventions. Our audience feedback showed they did do this and were able to understand all the connotations behind the conventions we developed. However, people are open to interpret things differently. Especially considering posters only show certain things with in the narrative - which is good, as audiences will want to find out what they things mean. For example, In our poster we have the image of "your stalker followed you" which doesn't give too much away about the narrative, yet it means that the antagonist is obsessed with the girl. | :) |
