Diffraction | The phenomenon of bending or spreading of waves when they pass an obstacle, or pass through an aperture. |
Superposition | When two or more waves of the same kind exist simultaneously at a point in a medium, the resultant displacement of waves at a given point in time is the vector sum of the displacement due to each wave acting independently. |
Interference | When waves from two or more coherent sources superpose with one another producing a resultant wave. |
Constructive interference | Two waves that arrive in phase, the wave crest from one source always meet the wave crest of the other. This can only occur if the path difference of the waves from the two sources is zero or they differ by integral multiple of wavelength. |
Coherent | Waves have the same frequency and have a constant phase difference. |
Progressive wave | The movement of a disturbance from a source which transfers energy but not material to places around it. |
