Early years of the Weimar Republic - why were Germany facing so many problems ? They were politically unstable after the Kaiser abdicated. The new Weimar Republic was lead by weak governments People though that the new government had betrayed Germany by surrendering in WW1
The Weimar constitution - who elects the Chancellor? Appointed by the president but needs the support of majority of the Reichstag
Who were the Reichstag? Same as our House of Commons . They had the power to pass or reject laws.
Name 5 weaknesses of the Weimar constitution ; A lot of parties in parliament Weak governments President had too much power Opposition parties were allowed to criticise the government Traditional institutions weren't reformed
Name 2 strengths of the Weimar Constitution Political parties received the same percentage of seats as they did votes. Role of the president of the Weimar Republic was strong
Sparcasist Revolt (1919) (left wing uprising) - who were they and who led it ? German communist party who wanted Germany to be run by the working classes , led by Rosa Luxemburg and Karl Liebknech
What happened? They seized headquarters of the Governments newspaper and telegraph and tried to organise a government strike but many of the protesters went home frustrated due to lack of planning by the Sparcasists
Where and when did it take place ? Berlin on the 5th of January 1919
What happened after the Revolt? The Government, which had moved to Weimar to avoid the violence, employed the Freikorps to put down the rising. The Freikorps were ex-army soldiers who hated the communists. Over 100 workers were killed during what was known as ‘Bloody Week’.
Why did they do what they did? They wanted to overthrow the Republic and set up a communist government
How did it end ? Karl and Rosa were excecuted The communists and many of Germany’s working class had developed a hatred of the Social Democrats.
The Kapp Putsch(1920) - who led the Kapp Putsch ? DR Wolfgang Kapp
Where and when did it take place? Berlin and March 1920
What happened ? They attempted to take power in Berlin. They setup their own new government in Berlin.
Why did it take place? They hated the Treaty of Versailles and also the Weimar for signing it
How did it end? DR Kapp fled
