Give an account of the feeding of the five thousand.
Why is the phrase "they were like sheep without a shepherd" significant? Several Old testament passages use the metaphor of shepherd for the future Messiah. So Mark may have been pointing to Jesus' identity as the Messiah.
What may the following have represented in the feeding of the 5000 story? 1) 5 loaves 2) 2 fish 3) 12 basketfuls 1) 5 books of Jewish law (Torah) 2) Two stone tablets on which the 10 commandments were said to have been written 3) 12 tribes that formed Israel
What does 'Messiah' (or 'Christ' in Greek) mean? Anointed one. Chosen by god.
What is the Messiah? The person whom God will send to save humanity. Christians believe Jesus to be the Messiah (Christ).
Why was the Messiah sometimes given the title 'Son of David'? Prophets believed that God would send a king who would bring justice and peace. They believed that this 'anointed one' (chosen by God) would be a descendant of King David because David was one of the only Kings who ruled well.
What did the Zealots believe about the Messiah? That he would be a warrior figure who would set the Jews free from Roman control and establish Israel as an independent nation.
Why may Jesus have wanted to keep his identity as the Messiah secret? 1) Jesus did not heal people to 'prove' his identity. For him, it was more important that people had faith. 2) Jesus did not embody nor wish to become the conception of the Messiah which many Jews had, namely a king with great wealth and power who would demands obedience and service. 3) Jesus had no intention of being the political saviour which the zealots hoped for. 4) Jesus did not want to be arrested at an early stage in his ministry, before he had had time to reach many people with his teachings.
What does the title 'Son of Man' mean? Variety of possible meanings: 1) A man. Used to emphasise insignificance of humans in vast universe in the psalms. 2) A vulnerable man. Used to contrast the power of God with the weaknesses of humans 3) A glorious man who had power and authority from God.
Why did Jesus refer to himself as the Son of Man? It was vague and so could mean different things to different people. It carried no political threat so he would avoid being arrested by using it. However, it still linked him to references in the old testament. He may have also used it to demonstrate his humility.

How did Mark interpret the fact that demon possessed people referred to Jesus as the Son of God. Although demons were forces of evil, they had supernatural knowledge, and so recognised who Jesus really was, and what his relationship with God was.

Why do some Christians not like the title 'Messiah' for Jesus? Messiah is a Jewish title, and not many Christians today have a Jewish background. Christians also may want to discourage the view that Jesus was a worldly king, pursuing aims such as status and power, which the title 'Messiah' might imply.
What is an alternative reading of the phrase 'whom I love', spoken by the voice from heaven at Jesus' baptism? 'whom I love', or 'beloved', is sometimes used to mean 'only'. So God may have addressed Jesus as 'my only son'.
