Design should express movie's vision, be appropriate for narrative, convincing sense of time, space and moods, suggest character's state of mind, developing themes
Production Designer First collaborators hired by director. Artist and executive, responsible for concept, sets, locations, furnishings, props and costume. Production designer replaced art direction is 60s. Responsible for everything on the screen except actor's performances. Visual continuity, balance, dramatic emphasis.

Composition Framing (what you see on screen) Kinesis (what moves on the screen). Relationship of stationary objects and figures as well as light, shade, line, color. Existence of onscreen and off screen spaces.
Chinatown Pull of cigarette smoke when no one is in the frame.
Orson Welles Depth of theatrical set while exhibit movement and flexibility in film. Deep focus, depth of field Lot of light + small aperture opening. Glass painting used if optics fail.
Three paneled layout Deep focus, when Thompson enters phone booth. Triptych : each panel related to the other. Waiter in the middle distance, Susan in background are given attention.
Lost Election Scene Low angle, deep focus, long take -> change in character's situation and power. Kane lost election bid for governor.
Moving Camera Create + transverse space. Extension of director's eyes. Shifting relationship between son, father, mother and new patriarchal figure. Way camera and characters move through space. Moves outside, reveals new guardian Thatcher. Triangulated dynamic maintained while father is marginalized. Camera tilts up when he approaches to show threat. Then shuts window, shuts son out of his life. Mother opens window. 180 degree reverse shot of Mrs Kane outside window.
