Infancy Age: 0-2 years Norms: Sit unaided, Crawl, Walk, Start to speak, Solo play. Other: Bonding, Attachment, Fine and Gross motor skills.
Early Childhood Age: 3-8 years Norms: Fine and Gross motor skills start to develop, Can use full sentences, Learn the difference between right and wrong, Learn to share, Learn how to behave. Other: Temper Tantrums, Modelling, Fine and Gross motor skills.
Adolescence Age:9-18 years. Norms: Puberty, Emotional changes, Intellect develops, Develops sense of own values, More independent. Physical Characteristics: Grow taller, Periods, Pubic hair, Hips/shoulders broaden, Breast develop, Weight gain, Acne, Voice breaks, Testes produce sperm, Penis grows.
Early Adulthood Age: 19-45 years Norms: Increased responsibility, Cohabit, Marriage, Start a family, More financial responsibility, Leave home, Permanent job. Physical Characteristics: Reach peak of physical maturity. Other: Physical capabilities decline after this stage.
Middle Adulthood Age: 46-65 Norms: Grey hair, Skin less supple, Less active, Wrinkles, Menopause. Physical characteristics: Periods stop, Hot sweats, Tiredness, Mood swings. Other: Empty nest syndrome, Mid-life crisis.
Later Adulthood Age: 65+ Norms: Less likely to be completely independent as they get older, Retirement, Death of a partner. Physical Characteristics: Organs less efficient, Bones are brittle, Less active and mobile. Other: Dementia, More support needed.
Formal Support From a professional e.g. nurse, counselor. Positive: Knowledgeable, Experts, Reliable, Access to other services. Negative: May lack personal touch, May not be enough money to provide all support.
Informal From a friend or family member. Positives: Will have personal touch, may be able to offer more personalized support than professionals. Negatives: May feel uncomfortable being helped by someone they know, Nothing is regulated, Support may not be right or high standard- unreliable.
Self-Image How a person sees themselves
Self-Esteem How much a person values and likes themselves.
Self-Concept The combination of Self-Image and Self-Esteem.
Fine Motor Skills Small movements made by small muscles Examples: Eating, sewing, pointing, cutting, gluing, writing, drawing etc.
Gross Motor Skills Big movements made by big muscles Examples: Walking, Running, Crawling, Throwing etc.
Expected Life Events Normally planned events, you know they are going to take place. Examples: Leaving home, Getting married, Having a child, Getting a job.
Unexpected Life Events Happens without warning, no time to plan or prepare. Examples: An accident, being made undercurrent, deaths, illness etc.
What are PIES? P- Physical I- Intellectual E- Emotional S-social
Work (Positive) P- On the go, Busy, Whole body being used, Money to pay for fitness. I- Using brain, Promotions, Problem solving, higher qualifications. E- High Self-esteem, valued, worthwhile, respected, earning own money. S- Meeting new people, working with like-minded people, Socializing.
Work (Negative) P- Stress of work may affect eating and sleeping, tiring, less to to be active. I- May be dull/boring, dead end job, no opportunities etc. E- Stress and anxiety, Worry to meet deadlines, depressed. S- May not like or respect colleagues, competitive environment, too tired etc.
Divorce (Positive) P- Decide to take more care of themselves, Reinvent themselves. I- Chance to do new things and take new opportunities. E- Relieved if relationship was unhappy. S- Opportunity to meet new people, fewer ties so can do more, don't have to consider someone else.
Divorce (Negative) P- Stress, anxiety, worry and depression may affect sleeping and eating patterns. I- Lack of intellectual conversation, may not go to work because of emotional affects. E- Lonely, depressed, isolated, rejected, low self-esteem etc. S- Lose 'joint friends', isolate self etc.
Redundancy (Positive) P- More time to get fit. I- Chance to re-train, take new qualifications and opportunities, start new job. E- Relief if job was boring, excitement and chance of something new. S- More time to spend with family and friends, more time to join clubs.
Redundancy (Negative) P- Stress, anxiety etc may affect sleeping and eating patterns, may sit around doing nothing. I- Not using their brain as often, not doing stimulating work. E- Feeling worthless and rejected, low self-esteem, depressed, worried about finances. S- Won't interact with people, less money to spend socially etc.
Having a child (Positive) P- Motivated to get fit after the birth, more exercise and active with baby to look after. I- Lots to learn about the baby and how to bring it up etc. E- Excitement, love, new person to bond with. S- Meet other mums, new set of opportunities, meet new people.
Having a child (Negative) P- Less sleep, erratic eating, may gain/lose weight, trauma of birth, Post-natal depression. I- May give up work to look after child. E- Post-natal depression, overwhelmed, anxious. S- Tied to child, too tired to go out, relationships strained, etc.
Getting Married (Positive) P- may be important to keep in shape for other person, I- Intellectual conversations with the person, learning new things. E- High Self-esteem; someone wants to spend their life with you, contentment, love, excitement. S- Mutual friends, shared interests.
Getting Married (Negative) P- Some let themselves go; no need to impress anyone. I- may give up opportunities to spend time with partner, hobbies etc pushed aside. E- Worry and anxiety regarding relationship. S- Spending less time with friends etc.
Death of a loved one (Positive) P-More time to take part in physical activities. I- More time to take part in intellectual activities. E- Relief, they're not longer in pain or suffering. S- More time to spend with friends and activities.
Death of a loved one (Negative) P- Sadness, depression may affect sleeping and eating patterns. I- May not attend work/education. E- Sad, lonely, depressed, guilt. S- Not wanting to go out due to depression, isolate themselves, cannot spend time with the loved one anymore.
Menopause (Positive) P- Periods stop. I- N/A E- No PMT S- N/A
Menopause (Negative) P- Can become moody, have to go on HRT, bones become brittle, hot flushes, trouble sleeping. I-N/A E- May feel old, depression, knowing you're infertile, anxious and irritable. S- Relationships can become strained.
Starting school (Positive) P- Active, new opportunities e.g. new sports. I- New opportunities to learn, challenges, learning resources, focus on education, brain more stimulated. E- Excitement, anticipation. S- Meet new people, new experiences and opportunities, independence.
Starting school (Negative) P- Tired because its new, may not eat or sleep properly because of nerves. I- May find the work too challenging. E- Anxiety, stress, worry. S- May feel overwhelmed, may not make friends easily or fit in.
Genes (Positive) P- May adopt healthy lifestyle to counter genetic possibility. I- May want to learn about the disease etc. E- Positive and empowered to do something. S- May meet new people through support groups, make the most of life.
Genes (Negative) P- May already feel defeated and not look after themselves, make themselves ill with worry. I- May not want to research, don't know all info. E- Worry, stress, anxiety, depression. S- may distance self from people, isolate.
Moving from another country (Positive) P- May be better living conditions and health care. I- New opportunities to learn, language and culture, education, work. E- Excitement, anticipation, positive. S- Opportunities to make new friends, new social activities.
Moving from another country (Negative) P- Negative emotions may affect sleeping and eating. I- Find the new language hard, could fall behind in education, find it hard to get a job. E- Overwhelmed, anxious, lonely, isolated. S- Hard to make friends, nothing in common, language and culture barriers.
Family (Positive) P- Influenced by physically fir, active members. I- Thrive on learning, developing themselves, encouraged to learn. Positive role models. E- Unconditional love, support, encouragement. S- Spend time with family, opportunities.
Family (Negative) P- May not be physically fit or have healthy diet, no structure. I- Education may not be important in the family, no ambition or role models. E- Argument, no respect, little nurturing. S- No time, money or want to do anything.
Friends (Positive) P- More likely to be healthy if friends are. I- Influenced to learn, try new things, ambition, encouragement. E- Feeling wanted and respected, loved, valued. S- Opportunities, social skills, healthy relationships, positive peer pressure, support
Friends (Negative) P- May be influenced not to take care of themselves. I- Influenced by friends negative attitude towards education, no ambition. E- Negative peer pressure, easily led, unhealthy relationships, arguments. S- No same interests, no role model, easily led, peer pressure.
Education (Positive) P- New sporting opportunities, learning about the body. I- Education to better yourself, challenges, mentally stimulating, opportunities. E- Enjoy opportunities, excited, positive, inspired. S- Friends, new activities, possibilities.
Education (Negative) P- Stress of school may impact on health. I- Work too challenging, unmotivated, lose self esteem,, no confidence. E- Overwhelmed, anxious, stressed, depressed, unable to cope. S- No good support network, may not fit in, no able to take part in social activities etc.
A serious accident (Positive) P- Determined to overcome any physically disability, adapt to become successful, new opportunities. I- Learn about ways forward, empowered to try new things. E- Optimistic, empowered, excited. S- Meet new people, new opportunities, support from others.
A serious accident (Negative) P- May be life changing, find it hard to be fit and active, unable to do things. I- Could affect school/work, may fall behind, not about to concentrate, a barrier may stop from attending. E- Depressed, isolated, embarrassed. S- Isolated, not able to join activities, friends may not support, embarrassed.
