Social anthropologists study social relationships and the cultural values of humans aim to study culture in the broadest sense, in order to gain a complete picture of the people they are studying
Social anthropologists cross in disciplines meant culture relationships of humans were not their only subjects for research. There was also keen interest in studying how relationships between primates and humans interacted
Social anthropologist - Malinowski Trobriand Islands 1914 fieldwork participant observation which involved being part of the islander’s life and culture.
Ethnography is the term used to define an anthropologist’s study of social and culture behaviours, the word originates from a combination of two Greek words Ethos (people) and graphia (writing) Ethnography could be described of two process, firstly as a method of research which involves describing and observing and then as process of explaining and documenting what had been found Malinowski describes this as a process of detailing every aspect of a person’s life, without being judgemental or being influenced by the researches own culture and values
Franz Boas - used the term cultural relativism to describe how anthropologists must be careful not impose minority world culture and values on majority world populations For example, European and American cultures from the minority world can be very different from majority world cultures such as the legal and correct age for children to marry (link with videos on the girls that marry in Banglasdesh)
Margaret Mead - maintained culture differences were influenced by the environment and not biological in-built traits observe and record the daily life’s and practices of Samoan girls from childhood right through to adolescence to see if the trends seen in American girls was similar to the Samoan’s
Anthropologists use cultural relativism in their research to make sure they consider all aspects in the child’s environment including culture norms and local traditions to make sure they fully understand all influences however the UNCRC does not consider such detail. It could also be said that UNCRC promotes a minority world view that childhood is a distinct and different period to adulthood, but children are still entitled to their own views an their rights should be protected and promoted, however this concept is not widely accepted in majority world views so how can the UNCRC be influential globally successful until this view is understood and acknowledged
