Scotland/ Puritans - Wanted to force conformity with the Church of England. Bishops were imposed in 1618. -The articles of Perth were not strictly enforced were deeply unpopular thus were never strictly imposed and the new prayer book that had been prepared in 1619 wasn't introduced.
Fears of Catholicism 1618-1625 - The Howard family had pushed the Spanish Match from 1614. - Tolerance for Catholics was increasing - Relaxation of recusancy fines 1622-1623. - England failed to support the Protestant cause in Europe.
William Laud - Refused role of cardinal in 1633 saying 'not with Rome as it is'. - Introduced the Prayer Book in England 1634 - Introduced a Prayer Book in Scotland 1637 - This instigated the Scottish National Convent and invasion of England (Bishop's Wars).
Henrietta Maria - Had Catholic advisers who had access to Charles. - Parliament tried to impeach her (Five Members Coup 1642). - Came from France where they believed in a more autocratic (absolute) monarchy.
Parliament's views on the Charles I becoming an absolute monarch - Attacked machinery of the Personal Rule in the first session of the Long Parliament 1640 - Destroyed the King's methods of collecting tax (impositions) - Triennial Act in Spring 1641 and Act of Perpetual Parliament in May 1641 demanded that Parliament should be held every three years.
