The term “subculture” is a breakdown of how particular groups of young people can be distinguished and identified because of unique and distinctive styles and practices The Skinhead subculture began in the 1970s in the UK during the time of many social and economic changes
Subcultures, can be created and identified according to different categories such as gender, ethnicity, and class and highlight the differences within youth culture For example - Although hip-hop was originally seen as a black youth culture its globalisation and popularity around the world has meant that nonblack youths also enjoy hip-hop and can relate to some of the cultural values it promotes
Lolita is a 21st-century subculture created in Japan based on female street fashions for teenage girls who use their appearance to produce a subculture identity part of the Lolita subculture to socialise and pose for photographs - The Lolita look uses clothes which portray the idealised image of Victorian childhood for example, flattened bodices to hide their bust and high waist and full skirts to hide their hips
If young people are distinctive cultural group with various subcultures as discussed what happens when your people grow up and leave the subcultures Some adults view childhood subcultures as a phase that they went through for example being a Goth. Others return to childhood subcultures as adults which is often referred to as being a midlife crisis
Subcultures can be seen as a way of nonconformity within society, however it could also be seen as the exact opposite Subcultural groups are often distinguished by the members conforming to set ideas and understanding on appearance, style and dress that often shocks some people.
