Which model places the Sun at the centre of the solar system? Heliocentric
Who proposed the heliocentric model? Copernicus
What did Galileo discover and what theory did it support? Jupiter's moons, Heliocentric model
What two types of waves do non luminous objects emit? Microwaves and radio waves
What invention allowed the discovery of Uranus, Neptune and Pluto? Telescope
What does the eyepiece of a telescope do? Magnifies the image
What is another name for a converging lens? Convex
Define focal length The distance between the focus and the lens
What happens to waves at boundaries between different materials? Refracted
What two things happen to a wave when it meets a boundary between different materials? change of speed and direction
What can you do to a real image? Project it on a screen
State two factors that affect the magnification of a converging lens. How curved the surface is and how close together the lenses are
What does a reflecting telescope have that a refracting telescope does not? Mirror
How can you change about the primary mirror to make the image brighter? Make the mirror larger
What do waves transfer? Energy
Define frequency. The number of waves passing a point per second
Define wavelength The distance from one peak to another peak or one trough to another trough.
Define amplitude The maximum distance of a point on a wave from its resting position.
What type of wave are electromagnetic waves? Transverse
What type of wave are sound waves? Longitudinal
What type of waves can be both longitudinal and transverse? Seismic
If a wave carries a surfer 52m in 8 seconds, what is the wave speed? Show your working. 52m divided by 8s equals 6.5m/s
If a wave has a wavelength of 13m and has a frequency of 0.5Hz, what is its speed? Show your working. 13m multiplied by 0.5Hz equals 6.5m/s
