Describe the limestone cycle 1. CaCO3 thermally decomposes to give CaO and CO2. 2. Add water to CaO to give Ca(OH)2 3. Add more water to form a solution 4. Add CO2 into the limewater to get CaCO3 percipitate.
How do we obtain limestone? Quarried/blasted from the ground and then transported by lorries.
Advantages 1. after extraction the sites can be used for recreational purposes 2.It provides jobs for locals 3. causes the residents to built better facilities such as roads. 4. brings money into the economy
Disadvantages 1. the large lorries cause traffic congestion 2. Noisy, dusty, dangerous 3. ruins natural landscapes 4. destroys habitats
Uses of limestone Chalk, building material (cement, mortar, concrete), toothpaste, medicines and to neutralise acids such as CO2.
Why does limestone erode away by acid rain? Acid rain is mainly sulfur dioxide. Sulfur reacts with calcium.
