What is Schizophrenia ? Bleuler - 'split mind' → split in the psyche; disorganised thought processes; split between intellect and emotion; split between intellect and external reality
Main symptoms of schizophrenia Auditory hallucinations Delusions Disordered thinking Control Emotional and volitional changes
Auditory hallucinations Individual 'hears' noises, usually voices in their mind, talking to them directly or to each other
Delusions False beliefs: delusions of grandeur (i.e. thinking you are God); delusions of persecution (others are trying to harm you)
Disordered thinking Individual feels that their thoughts have been inserted or withdrawn from their mind
Control Individual experiences a lack of self-control, as though they are under the control of an alien power
Emotional and volitional change Flat (blunt) emotions and the individual has little initiative and no energy
