What is an inclined plane? A simple machine that reduces the effort needed to lift a load by increasing the distance it acts.
What is a ramp? An inclined plane used to help lift an object.
What is a wedge? A double inclined plane, such as a knife or an axe.
What is a screw? A spiral-shaped inclined plane.
What does a ramp do? A ramp uses a smaller force over a longer distance in loading objects.
What is a pitch? The distance between adjacent threads on a screw.
What are wedges used for? Wedges are used to split objects because they change the direction of the force and increase its size.
What are some examples of wedges? Pins,needles, nails and doorsteps are all examples of wedges.
List some examples where zips can be found: Clothing, purses, sleeping bags, suitcases, handbags and pencil cases are just some examples where zips are found.
What does a zip consist of? A zip consists of two sets of interlocking teeth and is very strong when fastened.
How many wedges does the zipper slide consist of? The zipper slide is a collection of three wedge.
What are the three wedges? -A central wedge that unlatches the teeth as the zip is undone -2 side wedges that force the teeth together when the zip is done up.
What is a screw designed to do? A screw is a simple machine designed to cut through another substance.
What do wood screws do? Wood screws can cut through timber.
What are boat propellers? Boat propellers are screws that cut through the water.
What are aircraft propellers? Aircraft propellers are screws that cut through the air.
What does a screw with a small pitch do? A screw with a small pitch is easy to screw into a piece of wood, but to do so it must be turned many times with a screwdriver.
What does a screw with a large pitch do? A screw with a large pitch takes fewer turns of a screwdriver to be inserted into wood, but requires more force than the previous screw.
What does the screwdriver do? The screwdriver turns a screw into a piece of wood.
What is a thread? The spiral inclined place around a metal screw is called the thread.
