CPU (Central Processing Unit) | The 'brain' of the computer, processing information. Many things have them, including computers, laptops and even washing machines! |
Motherboard | The motherboard connects the CPU to the other hardware. The CPU sits on the Motherboard. |
RAM (Random Access Memory) | A storage unit in which programs and applications are stored. They have be edited and deleted. |
ROM (Read Only Memory) | Information is stored in ROM which cannot be deleted or written over, such as the ability to turn on and off. |
Graphics card | The Graphics card produces the visuals of the computer, the stuff on the screen. |
Sound Card | To produce sound, the computer must be fitted with a sound card. This is often attached to the motherboard or installed separately. |
PSU (Power Supply Unit) | The PSU supplies the components with power. The power supply converts a 110-115 or 220-230 volt alternating current into a steady low-voltage direct current that the computer can use. |
CPU Fan/Heat Sink | Used to keep the CPU cool and stop it from overheating. |
Hard Drive | The Hard Disk Drive, sometimes referred to as the Hard Drive, HD or HDD, stores or retrieves information. |
