Article 1 about the legislative branch; describes the Congress & its powers
bicameral a legislature made up of 2 houses
House of Representatives lower house of Congress; 435 members; representation is based on population; Serve 2 year terms
Qualifications for the HOR 1. must be at least 25 years old 2. a US citizen for at least 9 years 3. live in the district they represent
Senate upper house of Congress; made up of 100 members; 2 from each state (equal representation); elected by the state legislatures for 6 years

Article 1, Section 8 lists 18 powers given to the Congress
impeachment to formally charge an elected official with wrongdoing; the HOR votes to impeach; if the HOR votes yes there is a trial held by the Senate
enumerated powers aka "expressed powers"; powers given only to the Congress & they are listed in Article 1, Section 8 EX. Power to declare war
reserved powers powers that are "reserved" for the state govts.
concurrent powers "con"=with powers shared between the national Congress & the state legislatures; EX. power to tax
writ of habeas corpus (Latin means " have the body" Article 1, Section 9 states Congress can NOT suspend a person's right to writ of habeas corpus EXCEPT in cases of rebellion or invasion.
bill of attainder Congress can NOT make a law that finds a person guilty of treason or a felony without a trial.
ex post facto laws Power denied to Congress; Congress can NOT make a law that punishes someone for doing something that wasn't a crime at the time.
Article II about the executive branch (the President)
Qualifications to be President 1. be at least 35 years old 2. a natural born citizen (born in US) 3. live in the United States for at least 14 years
State of the Union Address the annual speech given by the President on Jan. 20th about the what's happening in the country
Commander-in-chief the President is over the US military
Article III about the judicial branch (aka judiciary); very vague; says there be a Supreme Court & leaves up to Congress to create "inferior" courts
Article IV about relationships among the states; includes the "full faith & credit clause"
Article V (5) Amending (changing) the Constitution; Proposed by a two-thirds vote in both houses of Congress, then it needs to be ratified by three-fourths of the state legislatures.
Article VI (6) Supremacy Clause; The Constitution is the "supreme law of the land"
Article VII (7) says 9 of the 13 original states had to vote YES before the Constitution went into effect
