Biological Rhythms Circardian Rhythms: Cycles that take 24Hrs to complete, such as sleep/ wake cycle. Affected by dark/light cues Infradian Rhythms: Can take less than 1 day - menstrual cycle of ovulating mammals Ultradian Rhythms: Cycles that can take more than 1 day, such as hunger cycle Disruption of these cycles can causes stress to the body as the body has to readjust to a new pattern
The Internal Clock (Circadian) Suprachiasmic Nucleus: in the cytoplasm show fluctuations in activity (depending on previous day-night cycle). Transplants of the SCN into another animal 'entrain' the rhythm in the transplanted animal. The SCN control the natural rhythm
Evidence of Biological Rhythms Volunteers were put into a 'free-running' condition (where there were no light or dark cues). Wherein they adopted a natural rhythm (SCN) which lasts about 25 Hrs. The Circadian cycles are desynchronised under these conditions. Body clocks are 'reset' within a few days once put back to normal conditions.
