Bases Substances that will neutralise acid.

Alkalies Substances that produce OH- ions when we add them to water.
How do we measure acidity? We can use pH scale to show how acidic or alkaline a solution is.
What happens when acids reacts with metal? A salt + hydrogen are produced.
What happens when acids reacts with bases? A salt + water are produced.
How can we make different salts? By adding different base or metal.
How can we make insoluble salts? Insoluble salts can be made by reacting two solutions to produce a precipitate.
How can we remove unwanted ions from solutions? Precipitation
What is electrolysis? The breakdown of a substance containing ions by electricity.
What types of substances can we electrolyse? Molten or solution. This is because their ions are free to move the the electrodes.
What happens to ions during electrolysis? The ions move toward the oppositely charged electrodes.
How does water affect the products of electrolysis? When electrolysis happens in water, the less reactive element, between hydrogen and the metal, is usually produced at the negative electrode. At the positive electrode, we often get oxygen gas given off from discharged hydroxide ions.
How is aluminium obtained from aluminum oxide? Aluminum oxide is electrolysed in the manufacture if aluminum metal.
What happens when we electrolyse brine? When we electrolyse brine we get three products - chlorine gas, hydrogen gas and sodium hydroxide solution.
How do we use these products? Chlorine is used to make bleach, which kills bacteria, and to make plastics. Hydrogen is used to make margarine. Sodium hydroxide is used to make bleach, paper and soap.
Why do we electroplate objects? To improve their appearance, protect their surface and to use smaller amounts of precious metals.
