The nuclear family Consists of parents and dependent children living together. Parents often bring up the children without help from other relations
The extended Family A nuclear family extended by grandparents or other relations such as uncles or aunts. More adults in the household can care for the children. Often 3 generations living together
The Lone-parent family These are increasing. One parent looking after the child or children. The lone-parent may be unmarried, seperated, divorced or widowed.
The reconstituted Family Have changed in structure and re-formed in a new way. These families usually have at least one child who is the natural child of one parent but not both.
The functions of the family The basic physical needs of shelter, food, warmth and clothing. Protection and support. Love and security. Opportunities for learning and development.
