What were the main aims of the League of Nations? | S-Stop Aggression I-Improve working and living conditions D-Disarmament E-Encourage co-operation |
Weaknesses of the league? | The organisation was a muddle; in a crisis, no-one could agree. The most powerful countries in the world were not members (USA didn't want to join, Russia refused and Germany wasn't allowed). The league didn't have an army of their own |
Why did America decide not to join the League and how did it effect how strong the League was? | American senate refused to join. Didn't want to get involved in other countries problems and didn't like the Treaty of Versailles. Too expensive. The league wasn't powerful enough. Sanctions would only work if USA were involved. Had to rely on BR and FR. The league didn't have access to the power of the USA. |
What were the strengths of the League? | Set up by the Treaty of Versailles. At the start about 60 countries were members. Britain and France were the main members (strong countries). |
What did the organisation of the League include? | Assembly, council, permanent court of justice, secretariat, international labour organisation |
What was the assembly? | The league's main meeting. Members met once a year. Decisions had to be recommended to the council. |
What was the council? | Small group of more important members (Britain, france, Italy, japan). Met 5 times a year and in emergencies. |
What was the permanent court of justice? | Made authoritative decisions on disputes. Enforced the peace treaties. Dealt with complaints. |
What was the secretariat? | Carried out the work of the league. |
What did the international labour organisation do? | Worked to improve working conditions. |
