What were the steps to Hitler taking over the Sudetenland? | There were Nazi's in the Sudetenland and riots broke out there. 15th September 1938- Chamberlain flew to Germany and met Hitler. They agreed that plebiscites should take place in Sudetenland, and Chamberlain eventually convinced France and the Czech president to accept. 22nd September 1938- Chamberlain met Hitler again, and Hitler asked for immediate return of the Sudetenland to Germany. 30th September 1938- Hitler met Chamberlain, Mussolini and Daladier in MUNICH (conference). They agreed for the Sudetenland to go to Germany (without agreement of Stalin). The Czech government were forced to accept. |
What happened when Chamberlain returned to Britain? | He claimed a war had been prevented and was regarded as a hero by many. "Peace in our time". Some in Britain warned it was like "feeding a tiger raw meat". |
What was the significance of the Munich agreement? | Hitler gained the Sudetenland by threat. Czechoslovakia was betrayed by Britain and France. Germany gained resources. USSR felt betrayed by Britain and France, some Russians felt they were directing Hitler to the east. |
