Local Area Network (LAN) | A network which all nodes are located in a small geographical radius from the main server. |
Wide Area Network (WAN) | A network which all nodes are located in a large geographical radius from the main server. |
Data Packets | A file which is split into many different pieces which is sent across a network. Stores data. It is reassembled at the other end. |
Hub | A central area where all nodes connect to, eg, a modem or server. |
Peer to Peer Network | All users are equal and files and peripherals can be shared. |
Star Topology | Most common type of server, all nodes connect to one main hub. |
Ring Topology | A server topology where all computers (nodes) are linked in a ring. |
MAC Addressing | (Media Access Control) Each node has a unique MAC Address which it uses to connect to a hub. This is its identity. It can be used to limit what each device can do as its MAC Address stays the same. |
