What is a Interface Card and what is it used for? (Communication devices) It is a electronic printed circuit that fits into a computers motherboard and is used to allow the computer to be recognised by the network and determines the speed of data transmission.
What is a Modem (Modulator-demodulator)? (Individual users) It is a device that plugs into a computer and is connected to a telephone line which provides access to a wide area network (WAN). It converts digital signal into analogue for the transmission of the telephone then converts analogue into digital for oncoming messages.
What is a broadband modem? It connects to a computer using a telephone line and uses a Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line (ADSL) to achieve faster transition rates. It links a computer to allow internet access to the user.
What is a wireless broadband modem? It is a wireless router that allows devices to connect to the internet wireless if the device has a wireless adapter. This translates the digital form to radio form and transmitted to an antenna.
What is a microfilter? It is installed to a phone extension and is used to stop the broadband interference.
Large Organisations Lots of hardware is required to link computers to a network and large organisations use lots of servers. Hardware such as, hard drives can be used to store databases and files that are shared online between users.
What are the different Data transfer media cables? Computers can be connected to the internet wirelessly or with a copper cable. 1.) Ethernet cable (coaxial - e.g. tv aerial). 2.) UTP (Unshielded Twisted Pair) . 3.) Fibre Optic - faster than copper cabling but more expensive.
What are the different types of Networking Software? 1.) Protocol - A standard of rules that defines how communication is used between computers. 2.) Modem Driver - A program that controls the broadband modem. 3.) Browser - Allows the user to view web pages using HTML (Hyper Text Markup Language). 4.) ISP - (Internet Service Provider) Provides a package for users which allows access to the internet and emails.
What is a Standard? Standards - It is a common way of doing something e.g. storing data in a format (JPEG, MP3, MP4 etc) and it allows the data to be interpreted correctly.
What is a Procedure? Procedures - They need to be carried out to allow security on a network. E.g. (Virus scanner - checks for viruses, Spyware - Gathers information about the user through the internet).
