MACBETH AMBITION Act I Scene III: The Witches tell Macbeth that he will be King, planting the seed of ambition. Act I Scene V: Lady Macbeth calls upon the spirits to give her the power to kill King Duncan. Act I Scene VII: Lady Macbeth convinces Macbeth to murder King Duncan. Act II Scene I: Macbeth sees a ghostly dagger, beckoning him to murder Duncan. Act III Scene I: Macbeth plots to have Banquo murdered so no-one opposes him. Act IV Scene I: Macbeth revisits the Witches to find out what he should do. He believes he is invincible. Act V Scene VIII: Macbeth desperately fights Macduff in an attempt to survive. He is killed.
MACBETH GUILT Act I Scene VII: Macbeth fears he is too loyal to King Duncan to commit the murder. Act II Scene II: Macbeth could not say 'Amen' after murdering Duncan. Lady Macbeth didn't commit the murder as she says Duncan looked like her sleeping father. Act III Scene IV: Macbeth sees Banquo's ghost at a feast. He feels guilty about Banquo's death. Act III Scene VI: Malcolm flees to England. Act V Scene I: Lady Macbeth mimes washing the blood off of her hands in her sleep. She imagines blood on her hands and feels guilty for her actions.
MACBETH THE SUPERNATURAL Act I Scene I: The Witches meet on the heath. Act I Scene III: The Witches meet Macbeth. They are shown to be prophetic as they tell Macbeth about his future. Act I Scene V: Lady Macbeth calls upon the spirits to 'unsex' her, so she can have the power to commit regicide. Act II Scene I: Macbeth sees a ghostly dagger, covered in blood. Act III Scene IV: Macbeth sees Banquo's ghost at a feast. Act III Scene V: Hecate is angry at the Witches - they acted against her wishes. Act IV Scene V: Macbeth visits the Witches, who show him three apparitions and tell him his future. Act V Scene VIII: The Witches prophecies come true.
MACBETH APPEARANCE vs REALITY Act I Scene III: Banquo says the Witches are 'imperfect speakers' - they talk in riddles. Act I Scene V: Lady Macbeth tells Macbeth to 'look like the innocent flower, but be the serpent under 't'. Act II Scene III: Lady Macbeth pretends to faint when Duncan's body is discovered. Act III Scene IV: Lady Macbeth pretends to faint again when Macbeth sees Banquo's ghost. Act IV Scene I: The apparitions appear to tell Macbeth that he is invincible, but they are actually foreseeing his death. Act V Scene V: The soldiers disguise themselves with branches, so Birnam Wood appears to be moving.
MACBETH GENDER AND MASCULINITY Act I Scene V: Lady Macbeth calls on the spirits to 'unsex' her and make her more manly, so she can have the strength to commit regicide. Act I Scene VII: Lady Macbeth emasculates Macbeth to manipulate him into killing King Duncan. Act II Scene III: Macduff tells the others to 'look to the lady' when Lady Macbeth pretends to faint. Act III Scene I: Macbeth tells the murderers that they will be in 'the worst rank of manhood' unless they murder Banquo. Act IV Scene I: The Witches tell Macbeth that he cannot be killed by someone 'of woman born'. Act V Scene VIII: Macduff reveals that he was not 'of woman born', and kills Macbeth.
MACBETH GOOD AND EVIL Act I Scene I: The Witches say that 'fair is foul and foul is fair', so good and evil seem to mirror each other in the play. Act I Scene III: When Macbeth and Banquo meet the Witches, Macbeth goes down the evil route and Banquo chooses the good. Act I Scene VII: Macbeth doesn't want to choose the path of evil. Act II Scene I: Banquo is kept up at night worrying about the prophecy. Act IV Scene I: The Witches say that 'something wicked this way comes' before Macbeth enters. Act IV Scene II: Macbeth has Macduff's family murdered.
MACBETH POWER Act I Scene V: Lady Macbeth becomes more powerful as the spirits 'unsex' her. Act II Scene I: The ghostly dagger seems to give Macbeth the strength to murder King Duncan. Act II Scene IV: Macbeth and Lady Macbeth are crowned King and Queen. Act III Scene I: Macbeth uses his power to manipulate the murderers into agreeing to kill Banquo. Act IV Scene I: Macbeth believes he is invincible after the apparitions tell him he can only be killed by one not 'of woman born'. Act V Scene VIII: Macbeth realises he has lost his power when Macduff reveals he was born via C-Section. He is then killed. Act V Scene IV: Malcolm becomes the new King.
MACBETH TYRANNY Act I Scene VII: Lady Macbeth convinces Macbeth to murder King Duncan. Act II Scene I: Banquo proclaims his loyalty to Duncan, saying that his 'allegiance [is] clear'. Macbeth commits regicide. Act II Scene IV: Macbeth becomes King. Act III Scene III: Macbeth is disloyal to Banquo and has him murdered. Act IV Scene I: The Witches tell Macbeth he will be killed. Act IV Scene III: Malcolm tests Macduff's loyalty by telling him that he would ruin Scotland as King. When Macduff says he doesn't want him back, Malcolm knows Macduff is trustworthy. Act V Scene VIII: Macduff kills Macbeth.
