Inequality | Inequality is looked at in terms of differences in income, wealth and consumption (what you can by) |
Absolute poverty | Reference to the actual needs of the poor, a family is poor if it cannot afford to eat |
Relative poverty | Judgements by members of a particular society of what is considered a reasonable and acceptable standard of living- never fixed it moves in response to changing social expectations and living standards, luxuries become necessities |
Income | Income is a flow. It measures the receipt of money per period of time |
Wealth | Wealth is a stock. It measures the value of a person's wealth at a given point of time |
Social mobility | Is defined as movement of individuals, families and households within or between layers or tiers in an open system of social stratification |
Inter-generational mobility | Refers to mobility between generations. |
Intragenerational mobility | Refers to movement between classes by an individual during their working life |
Meritocracy | Effort + Ability = Reward |
