Procedure * Used folk tale 'the war of the ghosts' *serial reproduction *repeated reproduction *13 men and 7 women
Serial Reproduction A piece of information is passed from one participant to the next, in a chain - variations between each version are measured
Repeated reproduction Participant is given a story to remember - they they recall it at different times - differences between each version is measured
Findings *form - order of events *details - information is lost *simplification - events are made less complex *addition - inaccurate details are put in
Conclusion Unfamiliar information changes when its recalled. It becomes shorter, simpler and more stereotyped; may be because schema effects memory
Strengths *done many times - showed patterns *other stories also used
Weaknesses *Unfamiliar stories used, familiar material show different patterns *did not always test repeated reproduction at same time intervals
