Genetic Engineering Benefits and Concerns
  1. Introduction
    1. Genetic engineering can be the direct manipulation of an organisms genome using biotechnology or the indirect modification through artificial selection
      1. This essay will discuss the most relavent aspects of genetic engineering and assess the benefits, limitations and concerns of using genetic engineering to improve animal, health, disease defence
        1. Firstly the previous methods of genetic engineer ing will be initially discussed, moving on to the current available biotechnologies and finally consider the future potential of these technologies
        2. Selective Breeding
          1. Selective breeding has been used for over 2000 years to select animals with desired traits based on phenotypic expression,
            1. Improve Health
              1. Breeding to produce homozygosity of desired traits
                1. Foot angle to reduce lameness
                2. "NZ" style easycare systems
                  1. Sheep
                    1. Foot rot
                      1. Worms
                  2. Desireable traits
                    1. Dairy cows are typical example of selective breeding with highest yielding cows bred to high yield (daughter) producing bulls
                      1. Benefits
                        1. More yield per cow (profitable)
                          1. Environmental/ feed the world/less cows required
                          2. Negatives
                            1. Irresponsible selection
                              1. Deleterious traits
                                1. Lameness
                                2. Poor fertility
                                  1. Nutrient partitioning
                                  2. Maybe inadvertedly selecting for deleterious triats
                                3. Increased production
                                  1. FCR

                                      1. Increase selection intensity
                                        1. Spread genes worldwide rapidly
                                          1. Cover more animals
                                            1. Reduce population variance
                                          2. Gene Identification
                                            1. Genes can now be identified to detect deleterious genes
                                              1. 1) Gene code identified e.g. Mastitis suceptibility
                                                1. 2) Opposite code created and marked with flourescence
                                                  1. 3) Code binds at site of gene if present
                                                  2. Genomics allows selection of more suitable parents
                                                    1. Select against weaknesses
