Compounds
  1. A compound is a substance that contains an atom of at last 2 different elements that are chemically combined
    1. For example, magnesium oxide is made from magnesium atoms and oxygen atoms
    2. Ionic Compounds
      1. An ion is an electrically charged particle that is formed when atoms lose or gain electrons.
        1. An ionic compound is when a negative ion (atom that gains an electron) joins a positive ion (at that lost an electron.)
        2. Acid
          1. An acid is a molecule that can be lost or gained by a pair of electrons.
            1. For example, citric acid or hydrochloric acids are acids. (Its kind of in the name!)
            2. Bases
              1. A base is a substance that can react with an acid which can then make a salt and water.
                1. They are normally metal oxides or metal hydroxides.
                  1. For example, copper oxide or sodium hydroxide are bases.
                  2. A base NEUTRALISES and acid.
                2. Carbonates
                  1. Carbonates release carbon dioxide when they are heated.
                    1. A carbonate always ends in carbonate
                      1. Like calcium carbonate
                  2. Salt
                    1. A salt is a compound formed when an acid neutralises a base
                      1. A common salt is sodium chloride because it is the salt you put on chips.
