  1. Breaking down with heat
    1. Transition metals break down and cause a colour change
      1. Copper(II) carbonate
        1. Iron carbonate
          1. Zinc carbonate
            1. Manganese carbonate
            2. Break down into a metal oxide and carbon dioxide
            3. Precipitation
              1. 2 solutions react and you get an insoluble solid in the solution
                1. some soluble transition metals compounds react with sodium hydroxyde
                  1. Copper sulphate + sodium hydroxide = copper hydroxide + sodium sulphate
                    1. Iron sulphate + sodium hydroxide = iron hydroxide + sodium sulphate
                  2. Transition metal ions
                    1. Insoluble transition metal hydroxides have distinctive colours
