How does it affect the students?

How can it affect teachers?
Allows teachers to better understand the students' needs
Allows teachers to see that students can apply what they learn
Teachers become facilitators of student learning
Why use authentic assessment?
Teachers are able to see how students "perform" instead of simply answering questions
Students have more freedom in demonstrating what they've learned
It gives teachers a better understanding of students' learning and struggles
How is it different from traditional assessment?
Authentic assessment drives the curriculum.
Not always only one right answer
Students learn to develop solutions instead of answering several questions
What does the research say?
Students learn better by "constructing their own meaning"
Establish clear and fair criteria from the beginning
Teachers are able to better address the students' learning needs
How can teachers use these assessments?
Develop a rubric to use for the assessment
Use as on-going and to monitor students' progress
