Gerunds and Infinitive
  1. Verb + to infinitive
    1. Verbs
      1. (can/can't) afford, *agree, aim, appear, *arrange, attempt, choose, *decide, *demand, deserve, fail, *hope, learn, manage, neglect, offer, omit, plan, prepare, *pretend, refuse, seem, tend, threaten, (can't) wait, wish.
        1. Example: If you decide to add nuts…
      2. Notice
        1. how the negative is formed
          1. Example: If you decide not to ice it…
        2. The following verbs + to infinitive always have an object before the "to" infinitive
          1. *advise, allow, encourage, forbid, force, invite, order, permit, *persuade, 'remind, *teach, *tell, *warn
            1. Example: Her father taught her to play tennis.
          2. Advise, allow, encourage,forbid and permit
            1. can also be followed by -ing when there is no object:
              1. Example: I advise you to add nuts.
                1. or advise adding nuts.
            2. The following verbs + to infinitive sometimes have an object
              1. Ask, beg, *expect, help, *intend, *promise, want
                1. Example: We expected to be late.
                  1. or: We expected Tom to be late.
            3. Verb + infinitive without to
              1. Modal verbs, “had better” and “would rather”
                1. are followed
                  1. by the infinitive without to
                    1. Example: You should add the eggs slowly.
                2. Help
                  1. Can be followed
                    1. by the infinitive with or "without to"
                      1. Example: We helped them (to) start their car
                  2. Make and let (always with an object)
                    1. are followed by the infinitive without to:
                      1. Example: Let the cake cool for half an hour.
                  3. Verb + -ing
                    1. verbs
                      1. *admit, avoid, can't face, can't help, can't stand, carry on, *consider, delay, *deny, detest, Dislike, enjoy, fancy, feel, like, finish, give up, *imagine, involve, keep (on), *mention, (not) mind, miss, postpone, practise, put Off, *recommend, risk, resist, *suggest
                        1. Example: I enjoy making it

                      3. Verb + to infinitive or -ing (with no difference in meaning)
                        1. Verbs
                          1. Begin, can't bear, continue, hate, dislike, like, love, prefer, *propose, start
                            1. Example: Continue adding the flour.
                              1. Or: continue to add the flour.
                          2. Two -ing forms do not usually follow each other:
                            1. Example: I was starting to make a cake when the phone rang.
                            2. Like + to infinitive
                              1. has a slightly different meaning from
                                1. like + -ing:
                                  1. Example: I like to catch the early bus on Mondays.
                            3. Verb + to infinitive or -ing (with a difference in meaning)
                              1. The following verbs have two different meanings depending on the verb form chat follows:
                                1. *remember, *forget, *regret, try, stop, mean, go on
                                2. Verb + to infinitive
                                  1. Example: Remember to check whether the cake is ready
                                  2. Verb + -ing
                                    1. Example: I remember checking that I had my keys when I left the house.
                                  3. Verb + -ing or infinitive without to (with a difference in meaning)
                                    1. The following verbs connected with the senses may be followed by an Object and either -ing or the infinitive without to
                                      1. Feel, hear, notice, see, watch
                                      2. Notice
                                        1. the difference in meaning
                                          1. between verb + -ing and verb + infinitive without to:
                                            1. Example: I watched the boys playing baseball.
                                      3. Verb + that clause
                                        1. All the verbs marked * in this unit can also be followed by a that clause with the same meaning:
                                          1. Example 3: I suggest adding some lemon juice.
                                            1. = I suggest (that) you add some lemon juice.
                                            2. Example 2: Imagine sitting on a tropical beach with a cool drink.
                                              1. = Imagine (that) you're sitting on a tropical beach...
                                              2. Example 1: She admitted taking the money.
                                                1. = She admitted (that) she had taken the money.
