When Rome Ruled
Political
The closest thing Rome had to a mayor was the Perfectus Orbus
The office supervises the import of grain, leads the police force, and maintains the roads, drains and water supply
Nota:
The main duty of the office is to oversee planning and building
Construction was used as a political tool
In 27 BC, Augustus is crowned as Rome's first emperor
Augustus fought for control for nearly 20 years
When Augustus was crowned, It marked the beginning of a long period of peace
Augustus was important because he designed the city to be a city that really functioned like the cities we have today.
In the first century AD, Rome is home to One Million citizens
Augustus eventually create the Urban codewords, the first police force and fire department
In 54 AD, Nero was crowned emporor
Nero killed himself in AD 68
Economical
Geographical
The Roman Empire spanned three continents and over 2 million square miles
Nota:
Rome also ruled 60 million people at the time
Rome was said to have been founded on the palentine hill
Rome was a problem because the swamp was a breeding ground for diseases and bacteria
Rome had more than 15 miles of tunnels
Romans got their clean water from the Tiber river
However, most of the drains were dumped at the Tiber, making the water contaminated
To solve this problem, Romans found fresh water outside the city and used aqueducts to bring it in
Roman aqueducts relied on gravity to bring the water in
Social
Romans worshiped the goddess Roma at the time
While Rome had most of the buildings made of marble, Other buildings were made of wood and caught fire easily
Most of Rome's people lived in cramped houses and multi floored tennants
This influenced people to use open braisers and grills for cooking which cause high risks of fire
One fire in Rome burned for one week, which destroyed the majority of the wooden city
Nero was accused of starting the fire himself in order to build a new dream city
One of the most important contributions to construction was creating concrete so that the Romans could build stronger buildings
Adding Volcanic sand to the mix helped Romans to build a stronger concrete
The Romans then developed Timber molds which allowed them to mold concrete in any shape
After Nero is killed, the Domus Aria is replaced with the Coloseum
The Emperor Hebrain then builds the Pantheon
