    • Suggests the power has overpowered her, causing her to desire more and be greedy. The quote has connotations of death.

      Nota:

      • Implies that the woman has always been spiteful/nasty.
      1. "where's your brains now,your money?" Tech: Rhetorical question.

        Nota:

        • The woman comes across as spiteful and belittling.
        1. "a Joan" Tech: Noun, historical context,religious connotations/language.

          Nota:

          • Referring to Joan of Arc. she was the polar opposite of the persona in the poem. Joan was thought to be courageous etc.
          1. "could" "might" Tech: tentative language.

            Nota:

            • Shows all the good things the woman could have become instead.
            1. "she did what we might" Tech: pronoun 'we', tentative language.

              Nota:

              • Pugh believes the woman isn't nice, but that there are other people capable of following the same course of action as her.
              1. "no nearer the light". Tech: noun 'light' , metaphor.

                Nota:

                • Far away from the hope of something better. Today's society is just as bad.
                1. "nobody." Tech: fullstop.

                  Nota:

                  • The fullstop puts an end to her domestication.
                  1. Stanzas 1,3,5 and 6 all begin with "she" and follow the pattern of "she...she"
                    1. "hanged" Tech: verb, plosive.
