-criminal law is what is on tv
-civil means a lawsuit by individuals or group
-crime=prosecute
-when the gov. brings an action against you=civil
-gov. and plaintiff bear burden of proof
-gov. has a larger burden of proof- "beyond a reasonable doubt"
-for civil they need less burden of proof
-govt only can put one in jail
