Risk Factors
1. the driver - competence, health, fitness, training, licence, driving hours, etc
2. the vehicle - suitability, condition, safety equipment, safety critical information, ergonomic considerations
3. the journey - routes, scheduling, travel distance, sufficient time, weather conditions
control measures
1. elephone or video call instead of travelling to meeting
2. substitute for safer alternative - e.g. plane/train
3. avoid unrealistic delivery schedules or appointment times - consider overnight stays
4. ensure vehicle maintenance schedules are in place
5. ensure vehicles are fitted with appropriate safety equipment - air bags, seat belts etc
6. company policy should include driving within legislation and highway code e.g. obeying speed limits
7. carry out regular check on driving licences
8. regular checks by drivers on their own vehicles - tyres, water, oil, etc
9. possible regular medicals for HGV drivers or high mileage drivers
10. have procurement policy that selects safest vehicles
