    1. theory went against common religious beliefs about how life on earth developed
      1. Darwin couldn't explain why new, useful characteristics appeared and how they were inherited

    2. Lamarck had a conflicting theory of evolution
      1. theory suggested that if a characteristic was used a lot by an animal it would become more developed.
      2. theory of evolution by natural selection is now widely accepted
        1. theory has been debated and tested independently by a wide range of scientists
