non degree route for mature students so is an ideal
opportunity for candidates who decide to enter
profession later on in life
Pupillages give on the job training
Bar vocational course gives training in advocacy (speaking in court)
Dining at inns of court has allowed pupils to gain 12 points by attending
training courses which is better for pupils outside of London
Salaries increase considerably once qualified and vocational stage is
much shorter than solicitors
Disadvantages
Course fees are expensive and can deter pupils from poorer backgrounds
No ILEX route for barristers unlike solicitors
Pupillages can vary in quality and can be hard to obtain a pupillage as they
are very competitive with limited places available
the training salary is considerably lower than solicitors (it is around half of what solicitors get paid
Pupils training through the non-law degree route only have one year of
formal training on the CPE course. Questionable whether their knowledge
of law is sufficient enough for the role of a barrister.
