The brand is a distinctive sign that indicates that certain products or services have been made or provided by a particular person or company. Its origin dates back to ancient times, when artisans reproduced their signatures or "brands" in their artistic works or in current products. Over the years, brands have evolved to configure the current trademark registration and protection system. Thanks to this system, consumers can identify and buy a product or service that, due to its characteristics and quality - indicated by its exclusive brand - suits their needs.
What rights does the brand confer? The protection of the trademark guarantees its owner the exclusive right to use the trademark to identify its products or services, or to authorize its use by third parties in exchange for the payment of a sum.
What kind of brands can you register? Marks can consist of a word or a combination of words, letters and figures. They can also consist of drawings, symbols, or three-dimensional signs such as the shape and packaging of products.
How do you register a brand? First, a registration application must be submitted to the corresponding national or regional trademark office.
What is the scope of brand protection? Trademarks are registered and protected in most countries. Each national or regional office maintains a Trademark Register that contains all the information related to registrations and renewals
