1. A variable is a location in memory which you can temporarily store text or numbers

    1. e.g. x=1 y=2 x+y=z so z=3 but because we can change the value of x and y and z, it is temporary
2. variable can only contain numbers,letters and underscores
  1. a variable name cannot start with a number
    1. in python you cant use a python reserved word as a variable name e.g.class is a reserved word so class=input would result in an error
