and modify nouns. They determine things about
the noun. Determiners are adjectives or articles.
Articles (Traditional Grammar)
Definite Articles
Used to restrict
the meaning of a
noun to make it
refer to one
specific thing.

Indefinite Articles
Do not refer to
particular things, but
general things or ideas.
A (before words starting
with a consonant), an
(before words starting
with a vowel).
I was born in a

Determiners (Functional Grammar)
Are used to determine things
about the noun. Determiners
can be adjectives or articles.
Demonstrative
Describes the
position of an
object.
This, that, those, these.
That is my dog Tilly.
Possessive
Used to modify the
noun to show
possession.
Your, my, her/s, his,
their, its, our.
This is our house.
Quantifiers
Show a quantity.
Some, few, many, lots,
several, a great deal
of, many, more.
