Bacteria
  1. Categories of Bacteria
    1. unlikely to survive in the body

      Nota:

      • conditions of the body is not suitable for it to survive.  unsuitble pH or wrong temperature
      • if ingested with food usually it will be killed by stomach acid
      1. Desirable Bacteria
        1. milk-souring bacteria

          Nota:

          • help in the breakdown of milk in the stomach by renin
          1. in the large intestine

            Nota:

            • contribute to the final formation of faces
            • some of the intestinal bacteria are dangerous if allowed to multiply on food
          2. undesirable Bacteria
            1. Feed on the tissue of the body
              1. cause disease by reproducing rapidly in the body and producing poisonous toxins
                1. result of
                  1. unhygienic conditions
                    1. Direct contact with infected people
                2. Bacterial structure
                  1. single celled
                    1. single DNA

                      Nota:

                      • Float freely in the cell
                      1. slime layer

                        Nota:

                        • loose gelatinous sheath
                        • deposit around the bacterial cell wall
                        • provides protection
                        1. capsul

                          Nota:

                          • when the slime layer become thick  it forms capsule
                          • for protection
                        2. cell wall

                          Nota:

                          • provide specific shape and protection
                          • prevents cell from swelling and bursting due to osmotic changes
                          • composed of polysaccharide and protein
                          1. flagella

                            Nota:

                            • extends outward of the cell
                            • long ,slender, thread like structure
                            • help in locomotion
                            • composed of protein flagellin
                            • Directly attached th the plasma membrane and not covered by any sheath
                            1. Replication by binary fission
                            2. Shapes
