Thermoregulation - GCSE Biology
  1. Vasoconstriction
    1. Occurs of core body temp. starts to fall
      1. Smooth muscle in arteriole walls contracts
        1. Arteriole constricts
          1. Less blood flows through capillaries close to the surface of the skin
            1. Blood is redirected through shunt vessels in lower levels of the skin
              1. Reduces the rate of heat loss from the body
    2. Vasodilation
      1. Occurs if core body temp. starts to rise
        1. Smooth muscle in arteriole walls relaxes
          1. Arteriole dilates
            1. More blood flows through capillaries close to surface of skin
              1. Increases rate of heat loss from the body
      2. Goosebumps
        1. Occurs when core body temp. starts to fall
          1. Each hair has a tiny muscle attached to the base
            1. This is called the Pili erector muscle
              1. The muscle contracts and the hair is pulled upwards
                1. This traps an insulating layer of still air
                  1. This reduces the rate of heat loss from the body
        2. Shivering
          1. Occurs when core body temp. starts to fall
            1. Muscles require energy to contract
              1. This energy is supplied by respiration
                1. During respiration some energy is always lost as heat energy
                  1. During shivering, the muscles contract repeatedly
                    1. The rate of respiration increases, and heat is generated
                      1. This reduces the rate of heat loss from the body
          2. Sweating
            1. Occurs if core body temp. starts to rise
              1. Glands in the skin start to produce sweat
                1. Water in the sweat evaporates
                  1. In order to do this, it must absorb heat from the body
                    1. Increases the rate of heat loss from the body
