Labour Advantages
1. 1929-1931 failures overlooked.
2. Media allies.
3. Suitable for post-war reconstruction.
4. Members of wartime govt. e.g. Cripps and Bevin.
5. Played on topics of "poverty" and "mass unemployment."
6. Strong campaign.
Conservative Disadvantages.
1. No clear purpose.
2. No 'land fit for heroes.'
3. Accused of obstructing NHS.
4. Churchill not committed to Conservative party.
5. Associated with 1930s depression.
War Context.
1. War weariness.
  1. Rumoured Churchill wanted war with Russia.
  2. General election 2 weeks after the war.
2. War propaganda = Labour policy.
Churchill.
1. 'Radical days were over' meant there was no real reason to vote for him.
2. Seen as a war lord not a peace time PM.
3. Churchill, not the Conservatives, popular = few new supporters.
Voting System.
1. FPTP meant that 50% voted against Labour (however 48% still relatively high amount.)
2. Labour had 30,522 votes per seat, Conservatives had 46,893 votes per seat.
Campaign Tactics.
1. Scare tactics e.g. Gestapo.
2. Speeches only impressed obvious Conservative supporters.
