  1. The science concerned with designing safe and comfortable machines for use by people
    1. Tips to ensure comfortability
      1. Right lighting

        Nota:

        • Reduces eyestrain, neck strain and headaches.
        1. A proper desk

          Nota:

          • Helps find the perfect working position. Should be deep enough to support your arms when working
          1. Computer screen level

            Nota:

            • At eye-level or just below. For optimal comfort, set about 45 cm from face
            1. Posture

              Nota:

              • Sit up straight, keep feet flat on the floor and knees slightly lower than thighs
              1. Choice of chair

                Nota:

                • Lets you tilt forward to reach
                1. Typing technique

                  Nota:

                  • Hold your fingers, wrists and lower arms in a straight line from your keyboard
                  1. Equipment

                    Nota:

                    • Keep equipment that you use a lot like telephone and computer keyboard within a distance of about 75 cm. Keep other storage and equipment further away encouraging you to change working positions during the day.

                    1. Eye Strain

                      Nota:

                      • Sore, tired eyes often caused by staring at a computer screen for long periods of time
                      1. RSI

                        Nota:

                        • Damage to the fingers and wrists due to repeated movements over a long period of time
                        1. Back strain

                          Nota:

                          • Discomfort or pain in the back and lumbar areas of the body
                          1. Adjustable chair

                            Nota:

                            • A chair that can be lowered or raised to suit the height of the user. The back can also be tilted into the correct position to support the back.
                            1. Food and drink

                              Nota:

                              • Edible and liquid items that shouldnt be placed next to a computer incase they spill into the keyboard
                              1. Wrist support pad

                                Nota:

                                • A gel filled pad which is placed under the wrists due to repeated movements over a long period of time
                                1. Deep Vein Thrombosis

                                  Nota:

                                  • A blood clot which can form in the deep veins in the leg after sitting for long periods of time with no activity of the limbs
                                  1. Foot rest

                                    Nota:

                                    • A device that is placed under the desk. The angle and height can be adjusted so that the user can comfortability place their feet on it.
                                    1. Information Overload

                                      Nota:

                                      • A psychological condition where a person becomes overwhelmed and feels unable to cope. Often brought about by changes at work, a too heavy workload or a very fast faced environment.
                                      1. Health and saftey work act (1974)

                                        Nota:

                                        • The legislation that ensures that employers provide a safe working environment for all staff
                                        1. Eye test

                                          Nota:

                                          • An examination that should be performed at least once a year if you need to wear glasses for using a computer
