Narrative tenses

Nota:

•    We use the narrative tenses to talk about the past. We can use them to tell a story or to describes past events, including anecdotes.   

1. Past simple

   Nota:

   •    It is used to express actions that started in the past and finished in the past.   
   1. afirmative structure
      1. Subject+ verb in past+ Complement.
         1. She worked all night yesterday.
   2. Negative structure
      1. Subject+ did not+ verb in base for+ complement
         1. He did not submit the homework beacuse he was sick.
   3. Interrogative structure
      1. Did (aux) + sbj+ verb in base form+ com+ ?
         1. Did you clean your bedroom?
2. Past perfect

   Nota:

   • It is used to make it clear that one event happened before another in the past.
   1. afirmative structure
      1. Subject+ had (aux)+ verb in p.p+ complement.
         1. They had bought a new house for their mom.
   2. Negative structure
      1. Subject+ had (aux) not+ verb in p.p+ complement.
         1. I had not studied biology.
   3. Interrogative structure
      1. Had (aux)+ sbj+ verb in p.p+ complement+ ?
         1. Had he eaten apples?
3. Past continuous

   Nota:

   • We use it to describe actions that began in the past and often continued for a short period of time after the action started.
   1. Afirmative structure
      1. Subject+ was/were(aux)+ verb (+ing)+ complement.
         1. We were playing in the rain.
   2. Negative structure
      1. Subject+ was/were+ not+ verb (+ing)+ complement.
         1. He was not eating vegetables
   3. Interrogative structure
      1. Was/were (aux)+ sbj+ verb (+ing)+ complement+ ?
         1. Were you working overtime?
4. Past perfect continuous

   Nota:

   •    We use it to show that an event or action in the past was still continuing.   
   1. Afirmative structure
      1. Subject+ had(aux)+ been+ verb (+ing)+ complement.
         1. I had been living in Italy for three years.
   2. Negative structure
      1. Subject+ had+ not+ been+ verb (+ing)+ complement.
         1. She had not been supporting her parents with some money.
   3. Interrogative structure
      1. Had+ subject+ been+ verb (+ing)+ complement+ ?
         1. Had they been studying for the oral exam?
